faq_for_flexible_schedule.docx |
Are you wondering how to get your students into the Media Center to check out books, to do research, or to get a library lesson that you have been missing since we started the new flexible schedule? I have put together a FAQ to help you navigate the new procedures. I have also sent out this document by email, and put it on the shared drive under "Media Center." Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions!!

LearnTrials.com is a great new WCPSS collaborative tool to help teacher sort through the overwhelming array of technology tools that are avialable to use in the classroom. You can see what other WCPSS teachers are saying about various apps, websites, etc. and you can leave your own feedback. It's very easy to use, and you sign in with your Google Apps account.
Here is a description from the WCPSS Intranet announcements page: Which EdTech is Best for Our Classrooms? How effective are the instructional technology tools we're using this school year? How do you know which technology products are best for your classroom? Thanks to a partnership with LearnTrials.com, WCPSS is providing a time-saving way to connect with your PLC, see what teachers in your school or across the district are using to get results, share your thoughts and questions, and discover the products that are best for your classroom. Wake County Public Schools values every teacher's expertise, so we invite you to share your real experience with any digital learning tool, online at http://wcpss.learntrials.com/. Your insights will not only help your PLC and other educators, but also help us make better decisions about the tools and resources we provide to you and your fellow WCPSS educators. In the next few months, you'll hear even more about the partnership with LearnTrials, including requests to provide feedback on specific products in use throughout the district and opportunities for professional development. If you're eager to get started, then please visit http://wcpss.learntrials.com/ to share your feedback on ed-tech, find thousands of useful insights from verified educators, connect with fellow educators to share products & best practices, and discover the digital tools that are best for classrooms like yours. Student iPads will often have an annoying pop-up window asking you to Update - please continue to tell your students to click on "remind me later." The updating process takes a long time and requires each iPad to be touched so it's not something we can do as soon as we want to. However - there are times when students will mistakenly click on "update now" - if that happens, you will get a white screen that says "Hello" and it asks for an apple id. I can't post the password here, but please check with me and I will send you the password.
We all have the ability to reset a student's network password if they have forgotten it. Just go to:
Shared\Groups\Staff\Student Password Reset A little box comes up asking for the username - which is the student id number. Then you set the password to the id number again. The student can then change it to a personal password again.
This quick video we made will help you trouble-shoot laptop cart charging problems:
Two teacher laptops came back to me in one day with damaged screens due to carrying papers on top of the keyboard while partially closing the laptop and carrying it elsewhere. So - please remember the screens seem to be very fragile - do not carry papers or anything between the covers of your laptops.

Canvas is a Learning Management System that allows WCPSS staff and students to interact and collaborate in a secure environment. To access Canvas, go to http://my.ncedcloud.org and enter your UID and password. If you need assistance with your NC UID, follow your normal support procedures for technology related issues. FAQs 1. Where can I learn more about Canvas? When you access Canvas, you will be enrolled in a course called Canvas 101. You can also access the Canvas Guides for lots more information. If you have additional questions, talk to your school's Canvas Coordinator (same person as your Blackboard Coordinator, which in our case, is Toni Kelley. 2. Do I need to move all my stuff from Blackboard/Edmodo/Google Classroom into Canvas? You may do so, but it's not required. The exact process to move classes depends on the source - check out the Canvas Guides on the Course Import Tool for more info. Tips for migrating from Blackboard to Canvas will be coming soon. 3. I need to make some changes to my courses - how do I do that? All classes are imported from PowerSchool, so however your classes are set up in PS is how they'll be set up in Canvas. Talk to your Canvas Coordinator (same person as your Blackboard Coordinator) if you have any more questions about classes. 4. I'd like to create a class for my PLT/Department/Club/etc. - how can I do that? This isn't available to all users yet, but we're continuing to add more features. In the meantime, you can request new classes from your Canvas Coordinator (same person as your Blackboard Coordinator). 5. I heard that Blackboard is going away, is that true? Yes, at the end of the 2015-16 school year. If you are currently using Blackboard, you may continue to do so. Just be sure to export any content you need to keep at the end of the school year. Use the Archiving a Course Tip Sheet if you need assistance. As you know, NCWiseOwl is a great resource for our students and teachers. It has a wide variety of resources across multiple subject areas. In order to support teachers in using these resources we created a NCWiseOwl Toolkit. This toolkit provides promotional materials and tutorials to help support and encourage the use of the content available from NCWiseOwl. Also, you will find information about WiseOwl Wednesdays in the toolkit. These Wednesday features include webinars and tweets to help NC teachers learn more about the use of NCWiseOwl. We will even use a special hashtag (#NCWOWed) on Wednesdays to share tips and tricks to better leverage NCWiseOwl resources. By the way, there has been a password change for off-campus use of NC WiseOwl for 2015-16 - please check with Mrs. Falcone. |
