The Magnet team was here to help me set up the new Datum Laptop Carts. (Good thing they did because it takes about an hour and a half to wire and set up one cart, and we have 25 carts!) Each cart holds ten laptops. These carts will provide security for the classroom laptops, and an easy and fast way to charge all the laptops at once. We have deployed 7 carts to classrooms so far, and work to finish the rest will be on-going. Accepting volunteers to help set them up! Thank so much to Tricia Seymour, Chris Shearer, Fonny Lo and Taela George-East for spending the day here to help. Hope to see you back soon! Teachers, see the short PD video we made on how to use the carts here.
The 2nd Grade classes showcased their Flat Stanley Country Research books to a large crowd of Green students and parents in the Media Center. Their books will be cataloged and put in the Media Center's permanent collection. Great job, 2nd Grade!!!
I went to the Wake County Public Library book sale last week and picked up a load of "new" books for our Media Center. I concentrated on Early Readers and non-fiction books, but I also managed to pick up quite a few popular titles that kids love, like Geronimo Stilton, 39 Clues, Junie B. Jones, and some graphic novels. The books are all in my office because I need to give them all new barcodes and enter them into our online Destiny Catalog. You are welcome to come and see them, but you'll have to wait a little bit before you can check them out. Here is just sample of what I got:
There is a beautiful new book in the library called Tar Beach by Faith Ringgold. It's about eight-year-old Cassie Louise Lightfoot's wonderful dream adventure in NYC. Here's a book trailer - check out this book!
Here's a video where the artist Faith Ringgold talks about her writing process and Tar Beach:
I loved this book so much that I emailed Faith Ringgold:

I just had to tell you I LOVED this book. It's so beautiful - I could get lost in each picture. It's fascinating, from cover to cover. I can't wait to read it to my students. She sent me back a response the next day!! Thank you so much. I remember listening to the school librarian reading stories when I was in elementary school. I went to PS186 in NYC in the 1930s. That was the best part of my day. How did she always know just what story to read? We had a library in the school and the neighborhood library was just up the street. I loved going there.
